409 Stainless Steel Pipe is a general purpose, chromium, titanium stabilized, ferritic stainless steel whose primary application is automotive exhaust systems. 409 Stainless Steel Pipe contains 11% chromium which is the minimum amount for the formation of the passive surface film which gives stainless steels their corrosion resistance. 409 Stainless Steel Pipe combines good elevated temperature corrosion resistance with medium strength, good formability, and overall cost.
As a martensitic 410 Stainless Steel Pipe, low carbon steel, when tempered 410 has good hardness and high toughness. In order to be technically classified a 410 Stainless Steel Pipe it needs to contain a minimum of 11.5 percent chromium. This property, as well as because of its strength and durability, makes 410 Stainless Steel Pipe have an overall good corrosion resistance.
420 Stainless Steel Pipe, also known as “surgical steel”, is an often used high-carbon martensitic stainless steel. 420 Stainless Steel Pipe is similar to Type 410, but has more strength and hardness. 420 Stainless Steel Pipe can be hardened through heat treatment, which brings good ductility for metal fabricators as well as excellent polishability.
